New BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé unwrapped

The new BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé’s sleek sheet metal, like its chassis, boasts improved rigidity. BMW says, thanks to this, the latest iteration of the 1 Series’ coupé-styled, four-door sibling offers not only a more agile driving experience and improved steering and cornering dynamics, but also increased long-distance comfort.

Further enhancing the latter, the M235i xDrive derivative is, as standard, equipped with the automaker’s adaptive M suspension set-up, a feature included in the (standard-on-the-M235i xDrive) M Sport package. The latter arrangement features variable, mechanically controlled and frequency selective shock absorbers. In addition, the M235i xDrive sits 8 mm closer to the ground.

Of course, the M235i xDrive is not the only model in the range. But before we get to the remaining variants in the line-up, let’s take a look at what is sited below the bonnet of the M Performance derivative.

Spearheading the 2 Series Gran Coupé line-up, the M235i xDrive is powered by a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, which exclusively sends 221 kW and 400 N.m of torque to the fore and aft axles via a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. According to BMW, these figures allow the flagship 2 Series Gran Coupé to sprint to the 100 km/h marker from a standstill in 4.9 seconds, before topping out at 250 km/h. On average, the M235i xDrive sips a claimed 7.5 L/100 km.

The second petrol-powered model (the remaining two of the quartet on offer is equipped with oil-burners) in the line-up, the 220 employs a 1.5-litre turbocharged three-pot, which churns out 115 kW and 240 N.m for a claimed 0-100 km/h sprint time of 7.9 seconds. This model’s top speed is rated at 230 km/h. Noteworthy, the 220’s average fuel consumption is a claimed 5.2 L/100 km.

However, if an economical 2 Series Gran Coupé is what you are looking for, the 220d is your best bet, with this model sipping a mere 4.2 L/100 km (claimed). The 220d’s 2.0-litre turbodiesel is endowed with 120 kW and 400 N.m. The 218d’s four-cylinder turbocharged oil-burner produces 110 kW and 360 N.m. This model’s claimed average fuel consumption is 4.6 L/100 km.
