Driven: Suzuki Vitara Brezza

by Kelly Lodewyks

The Suzuki Vitara Brezza compact SUV has been launched in South Africa and it’s been making waves with its value for money offering as a result of a pocket-friendly price point and long list of standard features.

So, what is it exactly?
The Suzuki Brezza is a compact SUV that has been available in India for a number of years. It is the fastest-selling compact SUV in that market and after spending some time with it on our local roads, I can see why. It’s a great step up for those who have been living with a hatchback for some time and now need a vehicle more suited to lifestyle and leisure.

How does it look?
I was going to go into detail about the looks of it all, but the stunning images show you exactly what a looker the Brezza is. It’s like a baby Vitara or a grown up Suzuki Swift. The family ties are obvious in the face, while the black sun visor-esque window gives it a cool two-toned look. Some of the vehicles actually are available in two tones so do inquire about if you’re heading to a showroom to purchase one.

How about those standard features though?
Well, first you need to know that there are two spec levels – GL and GLX. If you’re opting for the base spec GL, you won’t feel hard done by at all because it comes fully stocked with a ton of standard features. This includes, automatic climate control, an infotainment system with a touchscreen and equipped with Android Auto and CarPlay connectivity, a reverse camera, a multi-function steering wheel and electric fold-in mirrors. Moving up a spec level adds keyless entry with push-to-start button, cruise control, a cooled glovebox, auto-on wipers, a leather covered steering wheel and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror.

And what about safety and peace of mind?
On the safety front, Brezza owners will receive driver and passenger airbags, ISOFIX mountings for the kids and ABS brakes. Brezzas also come with a five-year/200 000km warranty and four-year/60 000km service plan.

How does it drive and what’s under the bonnet?
I was able to experience the 1.5-litre GLX auto on Cape Town’s roads and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed driving it. The gear changes on the auto ‘box were smooth and being a rather light vehicle, it was easy to conduct any overtaking maneuvers needed along the way. The engine with 77kW, is nothing to get too excited about, but no one’s buying a Brezza for how powerful it is.

What are people buying this for then? (VERDICT)
What potential buyers will want out of a vehicle such as the Vitara Brezza is practicality, good specification level, a comfortable car for a young family, something that will look good at the office and while out running errands and something that is a lifestyle vehicle at a fraction of the cost of a larger SUV – and the Brezza ticks all these boxes. So, if you’re in the market for a compact SUV, I highly recommend that you give this one a try.
