Driven: Lexus NX 350h

by Kelly Fisher

The 2023 Lexus NX is as stylish and luxurious as ever and offers a solid alternative to the “usual suspects” of the premium mid-size SUV segment. I’d go as far as to say that the likes of Audi and BMW will help you fit in and keep up with the Joneses, but this Lexus will make you stand out. I know, what a cliche… but I mean it. Here’s why.

Styling is on point
Or rather, it’s pointy. And sharp. It has typical Lexus styling with a refined version of the Lexus spindle grilled, angled headlamps and sharp creases along the doors that add to the sporty and premium feel of the vehicle. I quite like the rear end of the vehicle with an uninterrupted read light cluster that runs across the whole back end, and “LEXUS” spelled out just below that. It just looks super sleek and sophisticated.

New powertrains offer a variety of choice for buyers
The model we had on test features the hybrid drivetrain, which is available in multiple spec levels. There is the Lexus NX 350h that offers improved performance and efficiency over the non-hybrid models. It comes equipped with a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine, two electric motors, and a lithium-ion battery pack. The combined output is 179kW. The NX 350h is available in EX, SE, and F SPORT grades. The EX grade is the entry-level model, while the SE grade adds luxury features such as heated rear seats and a 17-speaker Mark Levinson audio system. The F SPORT grade adds sporty elements and performance-oriented features. Buyers also have the option of a 250 EX with 152 kW and 243 N.m, and a powerful NX 350 F Sport with 205 kW and 430 N.m.

It oozes luxury on the inside, too
The NX is a luxury SUV that looks the part inside and out. On the interior, you’ll find high-quality materials and upgraded technology. The multimedia system has a large touch display and can be controlled by voice with the simple command “Hey Lexus.” The NX also comes with safety features like Intersection Turn Assist and Emergency Steering Assist to help you avoid accidents.

The drive is just lovely
The hybrid model that we tested was very pleasant to drive – as many Lexus vehicles are. It can easily switch from an easy-going school run/work trip vehicle to a more sporty iteration of itself that’s ready to tackle twisty tarmac. If I’m honest, I’m not in that phase of needing to or wanting to test the sportiness of a vehicle, but with this one I pushed it just a bit (legally).

Overall, the Lexus NX is certainly a mid-size SUV that I would consider owning if it were in my budget to do so. It feels like a good all-rounder that suits anyone in any phase of life. And you will look good in it, too.
