Coupé-styled Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor confirmed for SA

Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) has confirmed its latest crossover/SUV offering — the recently revealed Urban Cruiser Taisor — is penned in to be introduced to the SA market. However, while more details of the SA version are yet to be released (closer to launch timing, that is), TSAM has mentioned that, here, in SA, it could be known under another model name.

What we know so far about the Urban Cruiser Taisor

If you haven’t noticed it yet, the Urban Cruiser Taisor, bar a few cosmetic changes, looks similar to the Suzuki Fronx. Well, that’s because, like the Toyota Vitz and Starlet, the Urban Cruiser Taisor is based on the Fronx.

However, as mentioned, its exterior styling does feature some Urban Cruiser Taisor-specific detailing. The latter includes a “striking” front end, fitted with slim LED daytime-running lights, a chrome-finished bar spanning the fascia, and, sited below the latter item, a black honeycomb mesh grille.

‘Round back, the Urban Cruiser Taisor’s taillamps are, like the front units, of the LED variety. A light bar connecting the rear lamps are also present.

Stepping into the cabin, a 9-inch display is sited atop the dashboard. The latter, touchscreen infotainment unit incorporates niceties such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The screen-mirroring functionality can be activated traditionally — via plugging in your USB cable — or wirelessly. In addition, the climate-control set-up is of the automatic variety.

A closer look at the interior reveals a multifunction steering wheel, replete with buttons for adjusting volume and skipping tracks, and activating cruise control. All-round electric windows are also included in the package.

Yet, a fair bet would be that some of these items will be exclusive to models sited higher up in the range. As a reminder, the more traditionally styled Urban Cruiser is available in two trim levels, base-spec XS and top-tier XR.

Speaking of placing out bets, the Urban Cruiser Taisor will arguably be powered by the same power unit found beneath the bonnet of its non-coupé stablemate. This is to say a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol, which directs 77 kW and 138 Nm to the front axle via a five-speed manual or four-speed auto transmission.
