Chery sub-brand Lepas will officially launch its first product in South Africa in the coming few days, with the Chinese automaker’s initial local model offering, the L4 compact SUV, scheduled to go on sale in Mzansi from 3 March 2026. The firm’s L8 flagship SUV will touch down on our shores soon after.

This is a pivotal moment for Lepas — Jay Jay Botes, GM of Lepas SA

Based on the Wuhu brand’s LEX architecture, the L4 is powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine that produces 108 kW and 225 N.m of torque. Drive is delivered to the front wheels via a six-speed dual-clutch transmission.

With styling inspired by a leopard, the L4’s bodywork measures 4 406 mm in length and 1 820 mm in width, and stands 1 635 mm tall. The wheelbase spans 2 700 mm.

Stepping inside, the L4’s cabin features such niceties as an 8.0-inch digital driver’s display and a portrait-oriented, 13.2-inch infotainment touchscreen. A wireless smartphone charging tray is also including with the package.

“As part of the globally established Chery Group, the L4 showcases the presence, innovation and engineering excellence that define our brand. The L4 is more than a vehicle for the stylish and discerning market, it is a statement of refined living,” said Jay Jay Botes, General Manager of Lepas South Africa. “Our authorised dealerships are fully prepared to deliver an exceptional ownership experience from day one.”

Also scheduled for Mzansi is the L8. Spearheading Lepas’ local product portfolio, the L8 measures 4 688 mm long, front to rear, 1 871 mm wide, 1 689 mm tall, and 2 800 mm between the fore and aft axles. The L8’s cabin plays host to 10.2-inch digital instrumentation, 13.2-inch touchscreen infotainment, an eight-speaker audio system, and a wireless smartphone charging tray, to name but a few items. A 540-degree surround-view camera array is also included.
