Battery-powered bakkie? Isuzu D-Max goes electric!

Yup, you read the heading right — Isuzu has launched an all-electric D-Max! Here’s what you need to know…

The emissions-free bakkie is powered by a dual electric-motor arrangement The setup is made up of 43 kW/108 N.m front- and 97 kW/217 N.m rear-mounted electric motors, which, combined, produces a total system output of 140 kW and 325 N.m. Power is sent to the fore and aft axle.

According to the Japanese automaker, these figures allow the D-Max EV, which tips the scales at a hefty 2 350 kg (claimed), to dispatch the 0-100 km/h sprint in 10.1 seconds, before topping out at “over” 129 km/h.

This is a new chapter in the legacy of Isuzu innovation and dependability — Yasuhiro Takeuchi, Executive Vice President of Isuzu Motors International Operations (Thailand)

The D-Max EV’s twin electric-motor setup is coupled with a 66.9 kWh battery pack, which, the company claims, provides an operating range of 263 km on a single full charge. So, how long does it take to recharge the lithium-ion item? Well, Isuzu says a zero to 100 per cent (11 kW) AC charge (via, for example, a wall box installed at home) takes 10 hours, while a 20 to 80 per cent (50 kW) DC fast charge takes one hour.

The D-Max EV measures 5 280 mm long, front to rear, 1 870 mm in width and 1 790 mm in height, making it slightly more compact than its internal combustion (ICE) siblings. The ground clearance is rated at 210 mm. The new-energy Isuzu’s approach and departure angles are 30.5 and 24.2 degrees, respectively, and offers up to 600 mm of water-wading capability. The braked towing capacity is rated at 3.5 tonnes.

“This model represents a major milestone not only for Isuzu but also for the wider commercial vehicle sector. We have engineered a fully electric pick-up that truly performs in real-world working environments, offering the same towing, payload and all-terrain capability customers expect from the D-Max,” said Yasuhiro Takeuchi, Executive Vice President of Isuzu Motors International Operations (Thailand).
